What is Asbestos?
For those who are unfamiliar with asbestos, it is an insulating and sound-attenuating product. It was widely used for pipe and ceiling insulation, spray-on fireproofing and numerous other construction purposes. Beyond just insulation, asbestos can often be found in flooring and roofing materials, along with some cement products.
Over time, it was discovered that overexposure to asbestos can lead to serious health problems. Hence the need for asbestos abatement. In the simplest of terms, this refers to the safe removal of asbestos from residential homes, commercial buildings and anywhere it was used during construction. Because asbestos is so dangerous, the asbestos abatement industry is highly regulated. It must be handled safely and disposed of properly when demolishing or remodeling a property.
Asbestos Abatement Regulations
When it comes to asbestos abatement, the asbestos in any material needs to be categorized in one of two ways: friable and non-friable. Friable means that the asbestos-containing material (ACM) can be crushed or pulverized with only hand-applied pressure. Friable material needs to be removed carefully and disposed of in a certain way because the harmful elements can become airborne when the ACM is handled. If the material is considered non-friable, there may be different removal and disposal procedures depending on state or municipal regulations. The requirements for friability and non-friability are set by the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Asbestos (NESHAP).
