Last month, we talked about the beginnings of a major demolition and environmental abatement project that broke ground at LAX. That was just the beginning for Matrix Environmental as this project is expected to run over the span of three years.
Making Room for the Automated People Mover
Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) contracted Matrix Environmental to oversee all structural demolition of 23 different properties at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). They are building a new high-tech train system known as the Automated People Mover (APM) that will revolutionize the way people get around the airport. The design-build project has been awarded to a joint venture team called LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) and it includes Dragados USA, Fluor, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, and Flatiron West.
The APM will span six stations at the airport along with a 2.25-mile railway. To build this track and its stations, a path needs to be cleared, which is where Matrix Environmental comes in. Our team is in charge of demolishing all the old outdated structures in the way. Without our trade of getting the site cleared and prepared for construction, the builders wouldn’t have the space to come in and construct the innovative new transportation design.
Project Scope
The scope of Matrix Environmental’s project will involve structural demolition and environmental abatement of 23 different properties at the airport. This includes the buildings, bridges, stairs, ramps, and hangars that need to be demolished. All materials need to be removed and disposed of properly to meet strict environmental regulations. This may also include abatement of any hazardous materials such as lead paint, asbestos, or mold that could be contained in these outdated structures.
The team at Matrix Environmental is excited about this major project and the challenges it presents. The airport will stay running throughout the entire demolition and construction process. Therefore, our team has to design and implement a plan that ensures the safety of the public, as well as our workers, while not interrupting regular airport activity in any way. Matrix is working in close collaboration with LINXS, LAWA, and our civil engineer to establish complete unanimity on the means and methods of our operation.
The Matrix Difference
With such size, scope and limitations presented by this project, the entire team at Matrix Environmental has dedicated a great deal of time to ensure that this project is planned to be executed safely and in an efficient manner. We will continue to provide updates on the Matrix Environmental blog as this project evolves with new challenges and new milestones.
