Dealing with asbestos in older structures is challenging work, but at Matrix Environmental, we make sure the job is done properly and safely. When it comes to asbestos abatement, there are several different methods that can be considered depending on the structure and various other important factors. Essentially, there are three different services that can be performed: encapsulation, removal or demolition. Let’s take a look at the differences between these three options.
Asbestos Encapsulation
It’s important to understand that asbestos comes in many different forms and was used in a wide variety of building materials. Encapsulation is the process of sealing the asbestos behind a protective coating and a durable material that prevents any hazardous qualities from contaminating the structure. Although the asbestos-laden materials will not be removed from the building, they will be sealed off for safety.
Best Conditions for Asbestos Encapsulation:
- When the asbestos has already been mixed with a durable material, such as vinyl-asbestos flooring.
- When the material is still in good condition without any wear or tear.
- When the affected area is easy to seal up (generally walls, floors, and other flat surfaces).
Asbestos Removal
Asbestos removal is the most common solution for asbestos abatement. It is highly recommended when the material in the asbestos has been damaged or if any potential airborne particles have been exposed in the structure. In this case, the asbestos poses a clear threat and the hazardous material must be removed as soon as possible to prevent further health hazards.
Three Key Steps of Asbestos Removal:
- The area is sealed off to prevent the spread of airborne dust.
- The asbestos-laden material is removed.
- The area is fully cleaned to remove any traces of asbestos particles.
Asbestos Demolition
In severe cases of asbestos contamination where there is decayed asbestos insulation involved, targeted removal of the asbestos will not suffice. Unfortunately, the whole structure is compromised and unsafe for human inhabitance. In these extreme situations, a full demolition of the building is recommended. Everything must be sealed off, torn down, and properly disposed of by a professional. Local laws will generally require this work to be performed by a licensed abatement/demolition provider like Matrix Environmental.
Asbestos is a serious matter and should be dealt with the extreme care. Whether it’s encapsulation, removal or demolition, Matrix Environmental will help you make the right decisions and prevent the asbestos from causing any more harm.
