Matrix Environmental has been involved in a number of different structural demolition and hazardous materials remediation projects at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Recently, we were contracted to handle 23 different demolition projects on the airport’s property as they continue to expand and upgrade their facilities.

The LAX Automated People Mover (APM)

The first property being worked on by Matrix under this new contract is called the LAX Automated People Mover (APM). This will be a high-tech electric train system built on an elevated guideway. There will be 6 stations throughout the airport, along with 9 trains that can quickly transport up to 200 passengers and their luggage from one terminal to the next.

The First Project

As this project has broken ground, Matrix has been there to demolish old structures in the areas that will be used for the new Automated People Mover. One of the properties affected was a Burger King restaurant in the terminal. Asbestos abatement had already been previously done on this particular property by Matrix Environmental, and now the next phase of demolition is happening to accommodate the construction of the APM.

Looking Ahead

This first stage is just the beginning for this major LAX demolition project. Matrix Environmental’s demo side of the project is expected to take place over the course of the next 2-3 years as we move through 23 different properties at the airport. The team at Matrix Environmental couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this development at the airport. They are really looking toward the future of air travel and our demolition services are a part of this growth and evolution throughout the airport’s various properties and structures.
